Scientists from Tatarstan and India will work together on new medications to fight cancer

Scientists from Tatarstan and India will collaborate on developing new medications against malignant tumors that do not respond to conventional therapy. This was announced by the acting rector of Kazan State University Diana Abdulganiyeva, during the business forum "TIME: Tatarstan – India. Mutual Efficiency."

On October 8, framework agreements for cooperation were signed at the site of Kazan State Medical University with the Savita Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (Kolkata) and the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur. These agreements are a continuation of the joint scientific and educational work of Kazan Medical University with India. The project implemented by the teams of Kazan Medical University under the leadership of Professor Sergey Boychuk and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Kolkata under the leadership of Professor Arindam Mukherjee is an example of cooperation.

"We are interested in both deepening and continuing educational processes, as well as developing new directions being clearly formed for us," said Diana Abdulganiyeva.

The project under the leadership of Professors Boychuk and Mukherjee will be implemented with funds from a grant within the framework of the 5th joint competition of the Russian Science Foundation and the Department of Science and Technology of India (DST). For 3 years the scientists will receive 7 million rubles per year. Professor Boychuk clarified that there is a possibility of extension for 2 years. Meanwhile, the process of creating a preparation from the moment of molecule discovery can take from 7 to 10 years if no difficulties are encountered.

As Professor Boychuk noted, the result of joint research with Indian colleagues should be the development of a new class of drugs that will ultimately reach clinics and help treating patients.

"Our project aims at developing new approaches to treating patients with malignant tumors, which, unfortunately, progress against the background of therapy with existing preparations. Today, this is one of the global problems in science and clinical medicine, as tumors begin to adapt to treatment, prompting clinical doctors to seek new treatment methods to defeat the terrible disease or prolong the lives of patients diagnosed at new stages," said Sergey Boychuk.

Professor Arindam Mukherjee expressed hope that medications developed with Russian colleagues will help and extend the lives of a large number of patients. At the moment, scientists have already conducted screening studies and determined which compounds are most effective. Over the next three years it is planned to study the effectiveness of these compounds in
combating neoplasms. In addition, a significant portion of clinical research will be conducted, which will allow for the organization of clinical trials in the future.

Honorary representative of the Pharmaceutical Exports Promotion Council under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India, Divesh Kumar, noted that the country is a recognized expert in pharmaceuticals. "Tatarstan has great promise for work in the field of pharmaceuticals. It is located very advantageously - not far from Moscow, which means we have access to people living in the CIS countries as well. The financial turnover is also quite good. Moreover, the republic has a developed petrochemical complex, which can also serve the interests of our companies. Plus, various digital technologies. India can export medicines and is working in this direction," said Divesh Kumar.

The honorary representative of the Pharmaceutical Exports Promotion Council under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India urged Russian companies to take a place in the country's market too.
